Saw this mentioned in your blog the other day- figured I’d check out our site.
Jen agrees with you and thinks that Everday Math sucks.
The improved results are not quite a false positive. I think the Everyday Math makes simple math easier. That’s a positive & scores would improve. However, it also make more difficult math more difficult.
Good Luck tonight!
Your message resonates with me and many others and not just the Every Day Math.
I could see all the candidates really care and are passionate about our schools, but I like that you came out and said exactly where you stand with nothing hidden.
Your background is also a HUGE plus for tackeling other areas that face the BOE, I hope even those who like the EDM look deeper into your experience.
You got our votes!
I was the “victim” of an absurd new math program (SMSG) when I was in Millburn High School (years ago). One of my father’s friends–a PhD+ in math–looked at the book I brought home and said it was absurd and would make things more difficult for me in the future with more advanced classes as calculus.
While our kids are out of the Wash. Twp.schools now, I can’t believe this nonsense is still continuing. Thanks Eric, for speaking up!!!!
Thanks HockeyLady – especially for the slam against Millburn High. Pass the word around and make sure people vote for Frenchman, Roehrich and LiaBraaten
Just what the world needs: another Know-Nothing blog by someone ill-qualified to discuss mathematics teaching and learning and with – SURPRISE! – direct ties to a would-be Republican presidential candidate. Luckily, the folks who do curriculum in New Jersey are neither stupid nor cowardly. I know folks like you get to do all sorts of mischief in various communities (e.g., Ridgewood, NJ), but right-wing politics is no substitute for learning about what it means do know and do mathematics. You don’t have a clue, but you know what you hate, I realize. And nothing – not facts, not conversation, not observation of high-quality mathematics teaching, nor anything else – will dissuade you from spreading shop-worn, recycled lies from Mathematically Correct, NYC-HOLD, and the rest of the hate groups and their ugly web site. I wish you ill-luck in your efforts to hoodwink the public and undermine the education of kids.
Thanks for you hate filled comment. I noticed that in your rude rant you neglected to slam the National Mathematics Advisory Panel.
You see I don’t need more proof to know the Lattice Method is a complete waste of time as is partial sums and other ridiculous methods that Everyday Math teaches. This does not help our kids.
It has nothing to do with my political beliefs and none of the other parents who has signed the petition has shown any concern. I have yet to see any believable facts that shows Everyday Math is helping our kids in NJ. The only thing that people point to are NJASK scores and that is a horrible measurement of proficiency.
Enjoy your sad, mean spirited life. I personally put myself out there for my town and have not attacked anyone and nobody in my town has been as rude as your comment.
This comment has to do with Reform Math, please move it to whatever you want on this blog.
1. I am in support of the parents in Long Valley who are attempting to rid the district of reform math, I am also involved in that in Somerset County.
2. We are fortunately having success and it seems likely that EveryDAY math will be bye, bye very soon.
3. I’m writing to post this positive article about our District: http://www.mycentraljersey.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080912/NEWS/809120356/1012/NEWS0201
Continued good luck and keep up the effort!
